Let Glasgow Flourish will encapsulate and represent the cultural diversity of the city in support of the 2012 Olympic Games and in preparation for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Based on the Olympic values of mutual understanding, friendship and freedom from discrimination it will provide a platform for intercultural dialogue within the city. The project will learn from the experience of others, provide learning and training opportunities for participants, whilst creating a legacy of understanding.
Let Glasgow Flourish will run a programme of community engagement resulting in an exhibition celebrating the diversity of Glasgow’s cultural and faith communities. There will be a volunteer training package on the topic of cultural diversity through which Cultural Ambassadors will learn from two sources: the experience of London 2012; and the cultural diversity of the commonwealth as represented through the city’s existing population and reflected in the museum’s extensive collection.
An extensive schools’ programme will be centred at St Mungo’s Museum, in line with the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence, aimed at children from primary 1 to senior 2. Let Glasgow Flourish will hold a conference where those involved in the cultural programme from the 2012 London Olympics and similar events (such as Manchester 2002, Athens 2004, Melbourne 2006, Beijing 2008 Vancouver and Delhi 2010) can reflect on their experience. A publication about this will also be produced. These will inform the cultural programme for 2014 and provide a lasting legacy for those developing cognate programmes. |
