We are a non-departmental public body (NDPB). We are independent from but accountable to the Scottish Government. Read more about public bodies.

How do I apply for funding?

To apply for funding you must submit an appropriate application form, either the one for individuals or organisations.  Full application packs with detailed guidelines can be found in the funding area and are downloadable. You should read the guidelines before you start filling in the application form.

Who can apply?

We accept application from individual artist and organisations.

Individual artists

We fund visual artists, dancers, musicians, craft makers, actors and writers of literary works or playwrights.  You must be working at a professional level within your artform, and we would normally expect you to be based in Scotland or the activity to take place in Scotland.  Please refer to the specific information in the individuals guidelines to ensure there are no restrictions to the fund you wish to apply for.

Organisations

You should primarily be an arts organisation though we welcome applications from other organisations seeking funding for arts activities such as: Local authorities, registered charities and other organisations which cannot distribute profits.  Commercial organisations and public sector agencies may also apply.   Please refer to the organisations guidelines for specific restrictions.

When can I apply?

Most of our schemes have set deadlines throughout the year and others have no deadlines. Refer to the Funding section and Guidelines for Individuals and Organisations.

Can I fill in an application on - line?

No, however, the application form is available on a range of electronic formats which you can download from the website www.scottisharts.org.uk. You can complete the application form on your own computer, print it off and send the hard copy signed by all the relevant parties.

Do you fund students?

No, we do not fund arts project by students in full-time education, neither do we have funding towards tuition fees.  Our information sheet 'Education and Training contacts for the Arts in Scotland' lists other sources of funding.

What don’t you fund?

A full list of what we do not fund is included in the eligibility area and in the specific guidelines, for individuals and organisations.

How long will I have to wait for a decision?

You will usually have to wait 10 weeks to hear whether your application has been successful, except for fast track schemes where you will hear within four weeks.  Please refer to the guidelines for specific details.

For applications for capital small equipment and building grants, the decision will normally be made within six weeks.

Where can I find information on other sources of funding?

Our information sheet Funding Sources for the Arts in Scotland lists other funding sources such as trusts and foundations.

The Directory of Social Change produces a series of books and CDRoms with information on trusts and foundations.

The Scottish Arts Council is the administrator for the Dewar Arts Awards and Arts Trust of Scotland.  Please note that these trust funds are completely separate from our funding initiatives.

Dewar Arts Awards are by nomination only and are aimed at exceptionally talented young people aged 15 - 25.  For further details go to the Dewar Arts Awards website.

Arts Trust of Scotland supports emerging artists who live in Scotland and are either in full-time education or out of education for not more than five years.  For further information and an application form, contact the Help Desk 0845 603 6000 or e-mail: help.desk@scottisharts.org.uk.

How can an organisation become legally constituted?

We have an information sheet called 'A Short Guide to Constitutions' which provides general guidelines or you can contact the Help Desk on 0845 603 6000 or email them on help.desk@scottisharts.org.uk

To apply for charitable status, contact the Inland Revenue, Financial intermediaries and Claims office (FICO).

Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations also has useful information and advice on this subject.

I work for an arts organisation and want to attend a conference, can you help?

You can apply through Professional Development for conference fees, accommodation, travel and subsistence.  Please refer to the individuals across all artforms area for further information.

How can I get a job in the arts?

We do not have a list of job opportunities in the arts, but vacancies within the Scottish Arts Council and other arts organisations in Scotland are advertised on our website.

You can also find opportunities in arts magazines such as a-n, the List magazine and Stage.  A weekly updated opportunities service for artists and arts professionals is published by a-n.  Also some vacancies are advertised in arts venues.  Often jobs within the arts are through word of mouth, and many arts practitioners work on a freelance basis for a wide variety of organisations and local authorities.

We are a small community group looking for a grant: can you help?

If your organisations annual income is less than £20,000 and you are looking for a grant between £500 and £5000, you should contact Awards for All.

Do I need partnership funding?

We will not normally meet 100% of the cost of the project, and in most cases, a minimum of 10% of the cost of the project should come from other sources, this can be cash and/or in-kind contributions.   For full details refer to the appendix of the guidelines.

No, but we fund a number of organisations which do and our information sheet Education and Training for the Arts in Scotland has useful contacts.

How can I find out about arts groups in my area?

We do not hold lists of local arts groups in Scotland, however you could contact your Local Authority Arts Unit or Voluntary Arts Scotland who should be able to point you in the right direction.

We do not hold historical information, for this we recommend you contact the National Library of Scotland (email: enquiries@nls.uk) or the National Galleries of Scotland (email: nginfo@natgal.ac.uk)

Dance: What information and funding do you have relating to dance in Scotland?

Dancers can apply for professional development funding (eg short term or for training courses, master classes, mentoring etc.).

We also have funding for Creative Development to support independent choreographers.  We also fund residencies.

Drama: Do you have funding for individual actors?

Actors can apply for professional development funding eg short term or for training courses, master classes, mentoring etc.  For a full listing please refer to the guidelines for individuals.

Literature: Do you have funding for writers?

We have funding for previously unpublished writers 'New writers bursary' and for published writers 'Writers bursary'.  We also have Storytellers' Bursaries.

Music: I am a musician, do you have funding for individual musicians and bands?

Yes, we have funding towards individual musicians and bands to create, develop and record new music.  

Musicians can also apply for Professional Development.

Music: What do you not fund for individual musicians?

We do not fund performance costs, overseas touring, CD manufacturing and production costs.  We don't have funding towards the purchase of equipment or instruments for individual musicians and bands.

Arts and community groups which need musical instruments and equipment should refer to the National Lottery Capital Equipment Guidelines.

Visual Arts: I am a visual artist, what funding can I apply for?

We have funding through creative and professional development to help with the more immediate costs involved in creating and presenting new work, research and development. We also fund residencies and may have other funding schemes available.
