In April 2006 Glasgow Cultural Enterprises embarked on a fabulous programme of musical activity for 0 to 5 year olds entitled Music for Early Ears.

Glasgow Cultural Enterprises has already successfully worked with six Glasgow based Nursery Schools on this exciting project which provides children with access to high quality musical activities delivered by a team of musicians specialising in early years work.

The project, funded by the Youth Music Initiative, also supports the professional development of the Nursery School staff with regular training opportunities, practical experience at delivering musical activities, and through the production of a complementary teaching resource.

Traineeships

Throughout the whole project, a total of eight Trainee Music Leaders will be involved, supported by Naheed Cruickshank, one of Scotland’s finest early years’ music specialists.  Naheed says 'the opportunity for young graduates and musicians to train in the early years sector is invaluable as it provides them with a safe structure within which to develop their skills. They have the advantage of attending training sessions, watching me work and the City Halls backing them in their work in the nurseries.'

Involving parents

The project also addresses the importance of engaging parents in their child’s learning by involving families in weekly parent and child music classes which complement the activities taking place within the Nursery setting.

Trainee Music Leader Yvonne Ingles says 'I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to take parent and child classes at the City Halls without the worry of finding a venue, advertising or insurance that would go along with starting my own private classes - this is a totally different experience to being in Nursery and a very worthwhile one!'

Impact

Jacqui Sharples, Education Manager for Glasgow Cultural Enterprises notes that 'One of the priority areas within the City Halls Learning Programme is our work with pre-school age children.  We recognise that participation in musical activities at a young age has an enormous impact on a child’s development.  Through the project we hope not only to impact upon the lives of the children involved, but also to increase the skills of our future music leaders, develop the confidence of Nursery staff when delivering musical activities and thus increase the quantity and quality of musical activities taking place.'
