Scottish Chamber Orchestra
Education Projects
Last November the Scottish Chamber Orchestra performed the first concerts of its new Young Adventurer series in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling. An innovative new work by Swedish Composer Karen Rehnkvist, 'When the Earth Sings' is an imaginative retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Daphne & Apollo: a tale of mystery, transformation and self-discovery.

The full orchestra was joined on stage by a brilliant young actress Ann Ogbomo who played the part of Daphne. The performance also included an introduction to the orchestra by Paul Rissmann.

The SCO Young Adventurer series has been specially created for families with children of primary school age. It brings award-winning UK stage directors, writers and actors to the world of the classical orchestra, transforming the traditional concert platform into a place of enchantment and imagination, as well as inspirational music-making. |
Thanks to generous support from State Street, the recent production of When the Earth Sings included school matinee performances in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Over 2000 children attended the two performances (one at the Usher Hall and one at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall). Judging from the feedback received, they had a great time:

“Thank you for the invite to the Usher Hall to see the lovely production of When the Earth Sings. It was very exciting and I enjoyed it.”
“It was the most spectacular music I have ever heard.”
“I liked the rumble of the drums.”
“I never wanted to be a musician but now I would love to be one!” |
 |
 |
“I enjoyed it when Daphne was a tree because she was describing the world around her – I never noticed how beautiful it is.”
“Thank you for inviting me and my class to the fantastic, spectacular displays of music…I have seen other orchestras but none of them were as good as you, it was super!”
It was good because when the girl was scared the music got scary!” |

Did you know? 'When the Earth Sings' was an SCO co-commission with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, with funding from the Scottish Arts Council. |
Coming up in Spring 2005, 'The Queen who Didn't Come to Tea' features music by Britten, Mozart, Ravel and Walton. The words have been written by author Alexander McCall Smith.
Come and join the SCO for a grand and glorious party! It's being held for a slightly dotty queen who has managed to get her engagements diary in a bit of a tizz. Award-winning novelist Alexander McCall Smith has created a new suite of short stories with musical interludes and accompaniment provided by the fantastic Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
