Concerts, workshops and classes were hailed a huge success at this year’s Edinburgh International Harp Festival in April. With guest artists from Brittany, Germany and the USA, as well as Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales the festival had a strong international flavour.
There were a huge variety of musical styles to sample, including: |
- Harp music from the third century BC
- Harp of Ur
- Punk
- Traditional
- Classical
- Jazz
- Folk
- Early Welsh harp music
- and modern composition
The concerts by guest artists and festival tutors featured some fantastic collaborations including:
Bachué and Hugh Webb
Corrina Hewat and David Milligan blended folk and jazz in the Scottish tradition and have now taken Bachué into its tenth year. They shared the concert with a performance by Hugh Webb, joint principal harp of the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Tales from Near and Far
Scottish traditional harp player Heather Yule joined forces with multi-instrumentalist Marion Kenny to present a packed programme of music and storytelling.
Catriona McKay and The Chris Stout Quintet
This concert featured Catriona performing her new ‘Suite for Celtic Harp.’ The Chris Stout Quartet had the audience dancing in the aisles with an infectious performance blending the Shetland fiddle tradition with world, folk and jazz influences.
This year’s workshops were a huge hit with audiences. They covered a diverse range of subjects including:
- How to improve your playing and prevent injuries
- Communicating through live music
- Starting to teach
- Harp care and maintenance
- and Celtic Harp goes punk
The 2005 festival had a strong focus on education. This was demonstrated through the 31 different classes on offer to all, from complete beginner to advanced players. Students used the opportunity to brush up on their technique or to explore a new musical style. Tutors included experienced musicians such as Ingrid Henderson, Corrina Hewat, Anne MacDearmid, Catriona McKay, Isobel Mieras and Rod Paterson.
