Tune Up 2004/05

More music, More people, More places, More of the time...

Tune Up so far...
Touring in February
Tours still to come

Tune Up so far...

This season's round of Tune Up tours have had a great reception and have visited venues as far apart as North Star in Lerwick to The Wynd in Melrose.  In addition to dance act SLAM, the fantastic Musaphir and the Hebrides Ensemble, Eddi Reader and Louis Mhlanga received rave reviews:

Eddi Reader - September 2004

"The evening, over two and a half hours long, was filled with beautiful or funny songs, jokes and ad-libs and a lot of laughs and clapping - Reader proving herself to be an all round entertainer.

"It didn't feel at all like a gig... it felt like a party.  In fact, if she could have taken the whole audience back to her hotel to carry the party on, she probably would have."

from the Evening News, 10 September 2004

Louis Mhlanga - October/November 2004

'The Big Big World festival opening its weekend programme celebrating the tenth anniversary of South Africa becoming a democracy with a musician who comes from neighbouring Zimbabwe but who played a significant role in shaping South African music in the latter part of the twentieth century as both musician and record producer, guitarist Louis Mhlanga.'

'It's easy to see why Mhlanga became both the guitarist of choice for trumpeter Hugh Masekala and the studio string-puller behind Thomas Mapfumo and King Sunny Ade albums.  He has all the flair, feel, jazz chops and confidence that Masekela's best work eludes, and the organisational discipline to achieve maximum punch from a band.  If his equally accomplished, grooving crew wasted a note, I must have missed it.'

Touring in February

The Delgados

Scottish group The Delgados are kicking off their Tune Up tour at the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, starting on 1 February 2005.

The Delagados are at heart of the contemporary Scottish pop renaissance. Through their renowned Chemikal Underground label, the group has not only built on its own recordings but has also launched the careers of Scottish bands such as Mogwai, Bis and Arab Strap.

Tours still to come

There's still lots more fantastic music to come from this year's Tune Up tours.  Touring over the next few months are:

  • Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, Sandra Joyce, Niall Keegan and the Scottish Ensemble Quartet
  • Phil Bancroft Quartet
  • Michael McGoldrick band with Dòchas

and Battlefield Band, who will be touring in May with musicians from Uzbekistan.

Like their Scottish counterparts they are masters of their traditional instruments but with music that is a mixture of traditional and modern influences.  When Battlefield Band and the musicians from Uzbekistan first met they naturally began to play each other's music, exploring and exploiting the differences as well as the unexpected similarities.

This collaboration with Battlefield Band enables the Uzbek musicians to visit and perform in Scotland for the first time and could not have happened without the support of the Tune Up tours, bringing new sounds and musical experimentation and celebration to audiences in Scotland.
