SoundAsArt Conference: Blurring the Boundaries

sound, Scotland’s contemporary music festival, takes place in November throughout the northeast.

Background and context

The first sound festival took place in 2005, following on from the success of the pilot event, Upbeat, in 2004.  By presenting a wide range of events including concerts, talks, electroacoustic installations and workshops, the festival aims to make contemporary music more accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.  The programme of is eclectic and broad, ranging through classical, traditional, popular, jazz and experimental.

Rajesh Mehta; Courtesy: Rajesh Mehta Initially set up as an initiative of the Woodend Arts Association in collaboration with the University of Aberdeen, sound operates as a network of local organisations, including music clubs, academic institutions and businesses.

Venues for festival events are in Aberdeen, Banchory, Banff, Inverurie, Tarland and Monymusk.

The programme

The festival runs from Friday 3 – Sunday 26 November, at a number of different venues throughout the northeast of Scotland.  This year’s programme features such ensembles as:

  • Hebrides Ensemble
  • Scottish Ensemble
  • Edinburgh Quartet
  • Aberdeen Sinfonietta
  • Da Vinci Trio (performing works by Sally Beamish)
  • Granite City Brass Band
  • ISAN and Tomcats in Tokyo
  • Symposia
  • Trianglehead
  • Dance groups Tabula Rasa and Scottish Dance Theatre
  • Artists and composers appearing at sound include:

  • Fabiana Galante
  • Graeme Stephen
  • Mark O’Keefe
  • Pete Stollery
  • Ruth Wall
  • Rohan da Saram
  • Rajesh Mehta
  • Heather Corbett

    A number of special events will take place throughout the festival.

  • Contemporary music and live electronics at St Andrew’s Cathedral
  • sound café debate, an informal themed discussions with a musician or composer
  • Sonic Postcards, a UK-wide project for in which local primary school pupils work with composers (funded by the Youth Music Initiative)
  • Young Composers’ workshop with the Edinburgh Quartet
  • A day with composer Graham Fitkin, working with local musicians
  • A film screening and illustrated talk on composer Xenakis
  • Score!

    Score! is Scotland’s new music day, organised by spnm, sound and the Scottish Ensemble, taking place on Saturday 11 November.  The event is open to composers and the public, and consists of workshops, talks and one-to-one composer surgeries with composers James Clapperton, Graham Fitkin and James MacMillan.

    SoundAsArt Conference: Blurring the Boundaries

    The conference takes place over the last three days of the festival and features soundwalks, presentations, installations and performances.  Presenters include Keith Rowe, Jonty Harrison, Rajesh Mehta, Giancarol Toniutti, Bill Thompson and others.  The conference is free to the public, but booking is required.
