Following the international success of Black Over Red, Theatre Cryptic, the Latvian Radio Choir and sculptor Glebs Pantelëjevs once again join creative forces. They have created a performance that will ravish the senses.

Books of Silence is a new contemporary chamber opera that crosses the genres of music, theatre and visual art. It combines eight voices, flute, clarinet, horn and string quartet. It also features movement from the choir and sculpture from a leading Latvian visual artist. Electronics, stunning real time visuals and lighting take you on a journey to the soul. |

Based upon seven poems by Oscar Milosz, Books of Silence reveals a world of eternal longing. It focuses on the closeness between love and death and the subtle beauty of past and distant memories. Books of Silence is about a dream, a dream far from reality.
Oscar Milosz (1877-1939) is a French poet of Lithuanian origin whose work was concerned with symbols and associations. As a recluse, his poems were vibrant and tormented, concerned with love, loneliness and anger.

Books of Silence will premiere at the National Latvian Theatre, Riga on 5 and 6 November 2004. It is the highlight and final production of Theatre Cryptic’s 10th Anniversary year. The production is part of the ARENA Festival and Opera Eupora.

It will then be brought to the UK for performances with the Paragon Ensemble at Tramway, Glasgow from 18 - 20 November 2004.
The first night of the performance at Tramway on 18 November is also National Latvian Day so a night of celebrations, food, drink and culture can be expected. |
