Artist of the Month: Theatre Cryptic

Trojan Women

5 - 28 August 2005, George Square Theatre, Edinburgh

Their new production sees innovative theatre company Theatre Cryptic push the boundaries of theatre at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.  Trojan Women is an adaptation of the Euripides’ Greek classic The Women of Troy, one of the most powerful indictments of war ever written.  It takes the perspective of the conquered and tells a story of acute suffering - pain, damage, loss and violence. The audience witnesses the Women of Troy waiting to hear their fate as they are distributed amongst the victors.

This Scottish premier has been adapted by Irish author and poet Brendan Kennelly. The production adopts a 20th-century edge and turns it into an powerful drama.  The work explores the complexities of the women and the defining the nature of their courage.

With this contemporary production, Theatre Cryptic presents a hard-hitting performance.  Acclaimed actress Myra McFadyen stars in the powerful lead role of Hecuba.  She is supported by:

  • Kate Dickie as Andromache
  • Itxaso Moreno as Cassandra
  • Candice Edmunds as Helen
  • Keith Macpherson as Talthybius and Menelaus

On stage the audience see them face the gods and the soldiers. They see the suffering of the women of Troy and experience the loss of their city and their families.

The Theatre Cryptic team include:

  • Direction by Cathie Boyd
  • Design by Julia Bardsley
  • Lighting by Giuseppe di lorio
  • Sound design, composition and real time visuals by Martin Parker

who will present a multi-artform production combining poetic language, projections and sound design. The Greek chorus is manipulated live on stage through real time visuals as the performance develops and deepens.

Trojan Women will be developed in three stages prior to a premiere at George Square Theatre as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The show will then tour Scotland in September before heading to the Royal Opera House, London in October.
