18th Annual International Folk Alliance Conference

Following her successes in 2005, 2006 is off to a cracking start for Julie Fowlis.  She sailed through 10 Scottish gigs in January - both as a soloist and in her established role as singer/instrumentalist for Gaelic band Dòchas.  At the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards on 6 February, Julie won the BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award 2006.  Mid-February sees her soaring off to the 18th Annual International Folk Alliance Conference in Austin, TX, USA.

Biography

Julie grew up in North Uist, a Gaelic-speaking community in the Hebrides, where her involvement in music was set in motion at a young age.

Dòchas, the sextet in which she plays whistles, pipes and oboe, has been growing in stature since the 2002 release of their self-titled debut album, and the group have toured north America and Europe.  In 2003 they were nominated Best Newcomers at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards, and Julie was voted Gaelic Singer of the Year in 2005 by the public, following the release of her 12-track solo album “mar a that mochridhe (as my heart is)”.  She is the first Gaelic artist to receive a nomination in the BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award, an award which she won at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2006 on 6 February.

Julie will be touring England and Scotland between February and April, and will be appearing as a showcase artist at the 18th Annual International Folk Alliance Conference in Austin, Texas.  A number of summer festival performances will soon be announced…

18th Annual International Folk Alliance Conference

This month, Julie Fowlis will be featuring as a showcase artist in Austin, Texas, in the 18th Annual International Folk Alliance Conference which runs 10 – 14 February 2006.  The conference is the premier professional development event focusing on folk, roots, multicultural and world music in North America.  This year’s theme is ‘For the Sake of the Song’ - a tribute to native Texan Townes Van Zandt and to all Folk Alliance members for whom folk music, dance and storytelling are at the heart of their work.  Last year’s conference attendance reached nearly 2,000, and this year’s expanded showcase opportunities are expected to enrich the conference even more. The North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance is the service association for the field, working on behalf of the folk music and dance industry throughout the year.
