Following the award from the partners fund, The Arches initiated a programme to support an artist in residence.  Al Seed was awarded the position, which followed the huge success of The Arches annual Circus Summer School - led by Al for the past two years.  The residency will span a two year period on a part-time basis commencing in July 2005.

Partners - Scotland's artist residency programme is funded by the National Lottery through the Scottish Arts Council.

The residency

Al’s residency will cover three areas:

- the production of his own work in the field of circus, street arts and physical theatre. This work will include both solo performances (the first of which ‘The Factory’ will be debuted in November 2005) and collaborations with other artists working in Scotland.

- the creation of a series of outreach and education programmes for young people in the Glasgow area, potentially leading to the creation of a permanent semi-professional company.

- his training of, and collaboration with, professionals and students working in the performing arts.  At this stage Al is keen to identify where his skills will be of most benefit to the artistic community in Scotland and welcomes proposals for future projects.

Through work in these areas the programme will seek to raise the profile of circus, street arts and physical theatre nationwide.

The artist

Al Seed studied Film & TV and Theatre Studies at the University of Glasgow before co-founding Vanishing Point Theatre Company with whom he performed for three years.

Subsequent to this he studied Physical Theatre and Contemporary Circus Skills at Circomedia, Bristol, where he specialised in mask-work and mask-making. At Circomedia he co-founded Hoax Productions with Ivan Marcos before going on to win a Jerwood Foundation Award 2002 and a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival 2004.

Whilst at the Arches, Al will continue to tour internationally with Hoax and fulfill his directing and teaching responsibilities with Circomedia. Al also enjoys ongoing collaborations with companies from both at home and abroad and frequent directing and scriptwriting commissions.
