Moniack Mhor Writing Centre

Moniack Mhor is the only dedicated creative writing centre in Scotland and has a reputation not only nationally but internationally in the literature world. It is located 15 miles from Inverness, set in atmospheric countryside, ideal for visitors seeking inspiration. Moniack is core funded by the Scottish Arts Council Literature Department, as it meets a number of priorities and helps deliver key local and national Literature strategies. As Scotland's national writer's centre Moniack plays a key role in the training and development of Scotland's writers.

Creative writing courses at the Moniack Mhor’s Centre begin on 21 June. To kick-start the open course season we start with a Crime Writing course, tutored by Val McDermid and Louise Welsh with a guest appearance mid week, by Andrew Taylor.

The course of 16 students is fully subscribed with one student coming from as far away as the States. Val McDermid, whose most recent novel, Hostage to Murder has tutored at Moniack Mhor in the past, but it will be a first time appearance for Louise Welsh of The Cutting Room fame. This will be the first of many courses throughout the summer.

Other genres of writing taught, will include:

  • Poetry
  • Novel writing
  • Fiction
  • Writing for Children
  • Life Stories
  • Starting to Write
  • Playwriting
  • Writing for Television
  • Writing from Life

For those of you who want the peace and quite in the most wonderful setting to complete that novel, we also run a Retreat week. There are still some free spaces on some of the courses.
