2004 was the Book Festival's 21st birthday and its coming-of-age celebrations. The festival aims to bring hundreds of the world's greatest writers and thinkers together to talk, read, share ideas and to discuss and argue about the most pressing topics of today. It is the largest and most dynamic Book Festival there is and a true celebration of the written word.
Thousands of visitors, of all ages and backgrounds flock to the Book Festival each August to
- Meet their favourite authors
- Discover exciting new talent
- Take part in the debates, creative workshops and author events
The Book Festival’s acclaimed discussion and debate series has developed into something of a speciality with topics as diverse as globalisation, fundamentalism, evolution, the politics of food and the environment. It gives everyone the opportunity to make their voice heard on subjects that really matter.

Uniquely, all events take place in one location which creates a real buzz. It’s one of the reasons why the Book Festival is widely regarded as ‘one of the most hospitable places in town’ (Scotsman) and ‘the intellectual heart of the festival as a whole’ (Sunday Times).
Rightly described as a festival of ideas, The Edinburgh International Book Festival is a place to inspire. It is a place to see things from a different perspective, to discover hidden gems and to travel to new worlds, to question and to speak out.
It promotes the enjoyment of reading and writing to young and old, encouraging children and adults to stretch themselves.
You’ll find a huge array of activities and events on offer – with many that are free. So come along and join in!
