Buccleuch Centre, Langholm, Dumfries & Galloway

The Buccleuch Centre in Langholm re-opened its doors to the public in February 2007 with a performance by Scottish Opera, and following that a programme of professional and amateur events and performances for their spring season.

The refurbished facility is a popular multi-purpose venue for the community, located within Dumfries and Galloway and sitting on the edge of the Scottish Borders.  Originally known as the Buccleuch Halls, the facility was first built in 1954 and over the years has been used for many community performances, events, weddings and festivals as well as sports use.

Managed by a voluntary committee, it was awarded £661,490 National Lottery funding from the Scottish Arts Council to develop the existing Buccleuch Halls, creating a high quality performing arts venue within the multi-functional community hall.  Prior to this the Centre received additional funding to support the development costs of the project which involved developing the business and artistic plans as well as the design of the refurbished facility.

The overall refurbishment project cost in the region of £1.5 million and with improved technical facilities, demountable staging and retractable seating, the redeveloped facility has the potential to develop new audiences through the development of its professional programme and working in partnership with other venues and organisations across the region.

Dumfries and Galloway Council Design Services worked with Gareth Hoskins Architects, Glasgow, in the early stages of the design’s development to achieve a contemporary building solution.

As well as improvements to the auditorium space, the refurbishment project has provided improved backstage facilities, a café/bar with reception and box office and a training room with IT capabilities.

The facility will provide:

  • An all-year-round programme of music and arts activities
  • New auditorium with tiered or cabaret seating with a capacity of up to 350
  • New Foyer featuring a cafe/bar and performance area with capacity of up to 80/100
  • New catering and function facilities for weddings, dinners and dances
  • Business, Conference and Training facilities in four separate areas
  • New Community Cinema opening later in 2007

For more information and a programme of events, please visit the Buccleuch Centre website.

Supported by the National Lottery through the Scottish Arts Council.
