An Taigh-Samhraidh

Front cover of An Taigh-Samhraidh by Aonghas Padraig Caimbeul

An Taigh-Samhraidh

by Aonghas Pàdraig Caimbeul (Angus Peter Campbell)

Translated as:
'The Holiday Home'

About the book

In this, his third major Gaelic novel, Campbell focuses on the contentious issue of holiday homes in the Highlands, where, in their quest for a second home in the countryside, rich incomers outbid locals whose families have had links with an area for generations. He explores several themes in Highland history including dispossession, migration, and the clash of language and culture between the Gael and the newcomer. He also raises intriguing questions about heritage and property ownership – to whom does a house really belong? Can anyone lay claim to community and culture?

Review

'Aonghas Pàdraig is to be congratulated for addressing real-life issues head-on with creativity, courage and hope...The people and places of the Highlands, we are reminded in the novel, are just as worthy as those anywhere in the world.'
Dr Michael Newton, University of North Carolina
