Glasgay! 2006

Highlights
The Importance of Being Alfred
Film

Glasgay! is 13 years old this year and the festival has matured into a significant annual event attracting visitors from all over the world.

With increased funding from the Scottish Arts Council, a three-year funding package from Glasgow City Council and substantial new support from Event Scotland and Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, Glasgay! has redeveloped the creative role of its Producer, Steven Thomson, shifting the focus from a presentation festival to an arts production company. This enhanced role has allowed the festival to commission a number of new and exciting works as well as continue to bring in the best international work from around the world.

Highlights

Glasgay's international programme is headed by leading New York artist and cultural phenomenon Richard Move with his loving and often satiric tribute to the legendary grande dame and mother of the contemporary dance, Martha Graham, in Martha @ Tramway.

CCA is the venue for a reading of Kathy McKean's new play 'Lie to Me', in partnership with the Playwrights Studio, and also for 'In the Dark', which samples the writing of Neil Bartlett, one of Britain's most acclaimed and innovative theatre artists.

Other highlights of this year’s programme include high profile drama commissions, with the first ever Scottish production of Alan Bennett’s classic monologues Talking Heads, in co-production with the Tron Theatre for its 25th Anniversary.

Commissioned for the Citizens' Theatre is Laurence Rudic,  who returns from Cairo, Egypt, with a spellbinding performance entitled 'And God Created…' exploring his life, loves and journeys through a world of enchantment, pain, release and fulfilment.

In association with the Arches Theatre, award-winning novelist, Louise Welsh's hit play 'The Importance of Being Alfred' runs from 31 October to 5 November.

n 1918 Hugh Pemberton Billing, Independent MP for East Hertfordshire, was sued for criminal libel by the dancer Maud Allan, following accusations in Billing's newspaper that Allan was a lesbian German agent who was 'corrupting' prominent members of society, with a view to bribing them into undermining the war effort.  The action of the play takes place in the run up to the libel trial, set towards the end of the First World War.

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Marketing Bureau stated, 'Not only will Glasgow benefit from the substantial economic impact generated by Glasgay!, but it will also continue to reinforce the city's position as a truly progressive and dynamic place to live, work and visit.'

Commissioned for CCA is the founder of New York’s Drag King culture, Diane Torr, who returns to the stage with an homage to her late brother in 'Donald Does Dusty' - a fascinating exploration of her teenage years and the impact on their lives of the iconic Dusty Springfield.

Film

Glasgay! also features a film programme of 17 movies at CCA and GFT.  At GFT, see 'El Favor' and 'Bam Bam and Celeste'.  CCA will host an interesting TRAN?GEND3RD season exploring some of the most political and sexy work to be seen this year.  This international programme criss-crosses the globe dealing with the harsh realities of living as transgendered.  With films including 'Enough Man' and '100% Human', Glasgay! is a festival that continues to have strong cultural and social relevance and is an important vehicle for reminding us that prejudice, isolation and intolerance still affects many aspects of our daily lives.
