Africa in Motion 2008

Africa in Motion festival launches new short film competition for emerging African filmmakers.  The Africa in Motion film festival (AiM), which takes place annually in October at Edinburgh Filmhouse, is officially inviting African filmmakers to submit short films for a new AiM competition. In order to target the competition specifically towards young and emerging African talent, filmmakers who enter a film for consideration must not have completed a feature-length film previously. Films entered must have been completed in 2005 or after, and must be no longer than 30 minutes.

The competition winner will be selected from a shortlist of films and will be announced at an awards ceremony at the third successive Africa in Motion festival in October 2008. The winner will have the opportunity for their film to be screened at AiM 2008 as well as the chance to win a significant cash prize. A selection of other short films specially commended by our competition jury will also be screened as part of a short film showcase at AiM 2008.

The deadline for competition submissions is 31 May 2008, and following from this a shortlist of films will be selected by an AiM viewing committee. The shortlist will be announced in July 2008. These films will then be viewed by all jury panel members, who will make a collective decision as to the prizewinners, based on a point scoring system that will take into account the relative merits of each of the short listed films.

For further information please visit Africa In Motion website for full submission guidelines and to download an entry form or email AiM festival director Lizelle Bisschoff.

Changing Roles - March 2008

Birds of Paradise's Agent for Change programme, with support from the Playwrights' Studio, Scotland, is presenting 'Changing : Roles' in March 2008.

Designed for the benefit of playwrights and directors of new work in Scotland, this one day event will stimulate debate around the question of how the visibility of disabled actors on the mainstream Scottish stage can be increased.  The event will look at the role of the writer in creating characters with disabilities - if, indeed, that is the right course of action - and also look at the director's opportunity to cast roles regardless of impairment.

With contributors from across the UK, the event will look at what has been done so far to address the under-representation of disabled performs in theatre and then go on to look at what can be done to use the creative process to redress the inequality. Action will be the desired outcome of the day!

Keep watching the Playwrights' Studio ebulletin for further information and information on how to book your place.  Enquires can be emailed to Robert at Birds of Paradise.

China-UK Connections through Culture

Are you looking to create links with Chinese Arts Organisations, unsure how to get started, or need guidance on how to over come bureaucratic hurdles to further develop links already established? Connections through Culture could be just the scheme for you.

China — UK Connections through Culture is a joint initiative between the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the British Council with support from the Scottish Government.  The initiative offers support, information, advice, networking opportunities and development grants to cultural organisations in China and the UK, aiming to build relationships and to develop exciting cultural collaborations between organisations in the two countries.

There is a website which contains a searchable database of organisational profiles and interests. All cultural organisations in the UK and China can register on the database to enable potential partner organisations to make contact.

A new casting agency for disabled actors

Dianne Kasperowicz, a second assistant director in the film industry was recently charged with finding supporting actors for the children’s BBC drama 'Desperadoes', a series about a wheelchair using basketball team.  Casting disabled actors has raised her awareness of the lack of opportunity disabled actors face and the difficulties directors have of casting them. Her answer is to start a new agency that will work with rather than in competition to the two similar agencies that exist.

There will be no joining fee or subscriptions, just the usual industry standard percentage deduction. Her problem is locating actors to join the new agency’s books.

If this is for you please email Dianne Kasperowicz or telephone 07847 473 641
