Appeal for Artists

East Lothian Council's Arts Service is looking to build on their existing portfolio of freelance artists who may be interested in tendering for future projects.
Artists must have experience of working with children and young people and specialise in any of the following art forms: circus skills, creative writing, drama, dance, visual arts, crafts, digital photography and media.
A relevant qualification, and experience of working in school or formal education setting or out with school hours is also necessary.

New mentoring scheme to support scottish theatre talent

Applications from senior arts professionals are being sought to become the first cohort of mentors for Step Up © - Federation of Scottish Theatre Mentoring Programme. This is a new scheme aimed at supporting the development of leadership and management skills of aspiring junior and middle managers across the theatre sector in Scotland.

Step Up © has been commissioned by FST and is being devised and delivered by three experienced arts and management professionals:  artistic director and executive coach Paul Pinson, and consultants Abigail Carney and Jane Hogg.

The closing date for mentor applications is 11 August after which 10 successful applicants will be given training in coaching and mentoring techniques over autumn 2008. Aspiring junior and middle managers will be invited to apply for 20 mentee places in December 2008. Each mentor will be matched with two mentees who will receive one to one support from January to November 2009. 

The scheme is FREE and is open to FST members from all areas of the theatre sector across Scotland.

dANTE OR dIE’s Chair Lift Project

Scenographer & Production Manager Needed:

dANTE OR dIE will go into a research and development period in September 2008 for an exciting and unique performance at Midlothian Snowsports Centre.  Audiences will experience sensual performances happening next to them, behind them, above and below them. Imagine floating through the air whilst a musician sits alongside you playing the tuba. As you look above, an aerial artist hangs from a chair and sings to you.  Below you, ten teenagers ski a thrilling dance down the mountainside. Suddenly your chair stops. You float in mid-air listen to the tale of ‘The Hillend Thumb’...

We are looking for an imaginative and inspiring Scenographer & Production Manager to collaborate with us on the R&D and the production in Summer 2009.

The right scenographer will:

  • be interested in or have experience in site-specific performance
  • enjoy collaborating with directors, musicians, actors, dancers, designers and young people
  • be excited about an open and collaborative on-site devising process where you will bringing material, ideas and energy to the creative process

The right production manager will

  • have had experience in site-specific performance
  • have a knowledge of health and safety regulations for site-specific performance
  • enjoy responsibility and collaborating with directors, musicians, actors, dancers, designers and young people
  • be an excellent leader, well organised and self-motivated
  • have a driver’s licence

Theatre Workshop - Call for Applicants

Theatre Workshop Edinburgh invites applications from professional actors and rock musicians for Peter Weiss's Marat-Sade. Rehearsing in Edinburgh in September and touring to large scale venues.  They are offering three-month contracts. 

As an inclusive producing theatre, they employ professional disabled actors alongside professional non-disabled actors in all productions.  At this time they are only recruiting professional disabled actors. They are also specifically seeking a signing singer and a signing narrator. 

A large scale, innovative and exciting show with live music and high production values that aims to build upon the success of Threepenny Opera.

'Culture Talk' is a unique consultation, the results of which will be used to shape culture in the Fife area. China-UK Connections through Culture

Are you looking to create links with Chinese Arts Organisations, unsure how to get started, or need guidance on how to over come bureaucratic hurdles to further develop links already established? Connections through Culture could be just the scheme for you.

China — UK Connections through Culture is a joint initiative between the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the British Council with support from the Scottish Government.  The initiative offers support, information, advice, networking opportunities and development grants to cultural organisations in China and the UK, aiming to build relationships and to develop exciting cultural collaborations between organisations in the two countries.

There is a website which contains a searchable database of organisational profiles and interests. All cultural organisations in the UK and China can register on the database to enable potential partner organisations to make contact.

Theatre Methods 2008

Call for Creative Presentations - 7 - 13 July 2008

Theatre Methods 2008 in an international festival exploring the bridge between traditional and contemporary performing arts. Held in Malpils, Latvia, the event will unite performers from across the globe, including actors, directors, dancers, choreographers, teachers, playwrights, designers and theatre critics.

They are currently accepting applications for creative presentations – such as workshops/masterclasses, works in progress, performance fragments, lectures and any other demonstrations. For more details, go to the Theatre Methods website.

Youth Theatre In Search Of Costume Storage - Glasgow

Gorbals Youth and Community Theatre wishes to rent a large secure room in the South Side of Glasgow to store their costumes in.

CATS Awards

The fifth annual Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland was announced on Sunday 10 June at Pitlochry Festival Theatre. The winners of these awards ranged from Sandy Grierson in Fergus Lamont to the National Theatre of Scotland's production of Black Watch.

Lung Ha's actor awarded place on Leadership Programme

Marsaili Farquhar is a member of Lung Ha's Theatre Company based in Glasgow. She is also involved with Dance Base and Theatre Workshop.  The Scottish Arts Council Equalities Department is supporting her to undertake a year long Leadership Training Programme (Leading Edge) with Mind the Gap Theatre in Bradford.

Leading Edge is an exciting new national network. The aim of the network is to promote the work of learning disabled artists all over the world. The programme includes a two-week residential course and six training weekends. There will also be trips to meet other arts organisations in England and a visit to a conference in Belgium.
