Scottish Ballet season spring 2006
Scottish Ballet season spring 2006 followed on from a phenomenally successful year in which Scottish Ballet made a highly anticipated and award-winning return to the Edinburgh International Festival (after a hiatus of twenty years); received nominations for two National Dance Awards and a South Bank Show Award and performed Ashley Page's, Artistic Director, brand new 'Cinderella' to record-breaking audiences throughout Scotland.
Page's witty and theatrical, critically-acclaimed 'Cinderella' premieres in England, touring to The Regent Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent and Sadler's Wells, London. It's a landmark return to the London stage after a six year absence and for the first time under the direction of ex Royal Ballet principal and choreographer, Ashley Page.
London audiences will also get the chance to see a 'one night only' mixed bill performance of work from three of the 20th Century's most influential choreographers - showcasing the full spectrum of world-class ballet for which the Company is now recognised.
The dynamic triple bill features:
- George Balanchine's tour de force, Episodes, performed for the first time in London in over forty years;
- Stephen Petronio's electrifyingly provocative MiddleSexGorge and
- Suite from Artifact, a new version of William Forsythe's ballet Artifact, specially arranged by him for Scottish Ballet.
This powerful and iconic programme will then transfer to Edinburgh Festival Theatre before closing at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow.
A Cinderella like no other, Page's quirky take on this classic tale has a style ranging from strong, classical roots to more contemporary techniques - with an energy that projects this timeless story into the 21st century. Cinderella is the second full-length ballet from Ashley Page since his arrival at Scottish Ballet and boasts a distinct theatrical vision with highly inventive choreography.
Ashley describes the Company, on which it is created, as being 'incredibly fit and dancing the best it has ever been, with real personalities, confidence and maturity'.

Featuring magical sets and dazzling costumes by world-renowned designer, Antony McDonald, this enchanting fairy tale is transported to 'a Vivienne Westwood meets Andy Warhol' 18th century France - with a decadence that embodies Scottish Ballet's most glamorous production yet. |
Cinderella is set to the rich and colourful Prokofiev score. The score perfectly contrasts the wonder and wit of the romantic fairytale, with elements that capture both the mischief and melancholy of the story. The score will be performed by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra.
'This Cinderella is a tremendous hit and deserved to be seen by everyone, especially those who believe they can't stand ballet. It is showbiz at its best.' - 5 Stars, The Daily Mail
Showcasing the eclectic repertoire with which Scottish Ballet has become synonymous, the triple bill features works from a triumvirate of groundbreaking 20th century choreographers:
Episodes (Balanchine 1959)
Episodes (music performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra) recently performed as part of Scottish Ballet's award-winning Edinburgh International Festival programme.
Balanchine's tour de force, Episodes, is a stunning display of symmetry and crisp, clean lines; starkly emotive, but at times irrepressibly witty and lyrical, set to an expressive score by Anton Webern. |

MiddleSexGorge (Petronio 1990)
The signature work of groundbreaking choreographer Stephen Petronio, and highlight of Page's successful first season with Scottish Ballet in 2003, MiddleSexGorge is both daring and boldly confrontational. Performed to the pulsating and explosive score of prodigious punk band, Wire, MiddleSexGorge is a defiant act of outrage created by Petronio for his Company and former lover Michael Clark - and is as much political as it is a work of art.
Suite From Artifact (Forsythe 1984, revised 2004)
Suite From Artifact (music performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra) was tailored exclusively for Scottish Ballet in 2004 by one of the most exciting and physically demanding choreographers of the past 20 years. Combining rigorous precision, stunning technique, insight and imagination, Suite from Artifact presents the entire Company growing with amazing force to a dramatic conclusion. A transfixing treat for the senses |
