David Hughes Dance Company - tour and residency

David Hughes Dance Company's summer tour will begin on 11 May in Edinburgh, before touring to Glasgow, Rothesay, Ullapool and finishing in St Andrews on 6 June.

The company will present a triple bill which features two world premieres: a new dance work by Tanja Liedtke, Imploded: Une Rêverie Romantinque and a collaborative hybrid commission by David Hughes, as well as the revival of critically acclaimed pure dance commission [4:Freeze-Frame] by Rafael Bonachela.

Imploded: Une Rêverie Romantique is a contemporary study of Les Sylphides, the first abstract classical ballet without narrative, structure or defined characters, choreographed by Michael Fokine and first performed in Paris in 1907. Tanja Liedtke previously danced with Australian Dance Theatre and DV8 Physical Theatre and has created several works for Australian Dance Theatre IGNITION seasons as well as choreographing works in Brazil, Germany and Taipei.

[4:Freeze-Frame] by award winning former Rambert dancer Rafael Bonachela (Director of Bonachela Dance Company and choreographer to Kylie Minogue) was commissioned by David Hughes Dance and Dance Base for the 2005 World Premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe.

The Company

Launched in August 2005, its main aim is to progress from presenting purely solo work to commissioning and choreographing a diverse and exciting contemporary repertoire for an ensemble of technical dancers.

David Hughes Dance Company is fully committed to the training of new dancers and will offer at least one annual apprenticeship which will mentor, nurture and develop young talent. They also run outreach and education programmes which are closely connected to its repertoire. These programmes include residencies led by company members and result in students performing alongside the company.

Residency at The Byre Theatre, St Andrews

As part of the Scottish Arts Council's partners programme, The David Hughes Dance Company is currently resident at the Byre Theatre, St Andrews.

During his time at the Byre Theatre, David will work with various schools groups, offering intense workshops which will cover a variety of dance styles and techniques. As well as this, David will work closely with groups already resident at the Byre Theatre, for example the Byre Youth Theatre and Haydays, with the aim of promoting and encouraging dance in St Andrews.

partners: Scotland's Artist Residency Programme is supported by the National Lottery through the Scottish Arts Council.
