Monday 28 July – Friday 1 August 9.30am – 4.30pm for Advanced Level Dancers
Citymoves is delighted to welcome Edinburgh-based dancer and teacher Steinvor Palsson to lead this week long workshop for advanced level dancers. Each morning will start with a Cunningham-based class, with emphasis on placement, core strength and breath. This will be followed by choreographic sessions looking at a piece of music from the Baroque period, creating simple movement phrases and exploring different ways of developing these phrases within the musical framework. Of Icelandic parentage, Steinvor Palsson was born and raised in Edinburgh. After completing her dance training, she moved to England in 1979 and danced professionally for 12 years, performing with a variety of companies including the Spiral Contemporary Dance Company, the Royal Opera Company, Scottish Opera and the Imminent Dancers Group, directed by Matthew Hawkins. Steinvor returned to Edinburgh in 1992 and since then has worked extensively as a freelance teacher and choreographer. She is currently teaching at Dance Base, Dance For All and Edinburgh's Telford College. She is also a regular teacher for the X Factor Dance Company and the Curve Foundation Dance Company, of which she is also Patron. Her choreographic work includes pieces for Scottish Opera, the Ensemble Group, St. Mary's Music School, Scottish Ballet's Education Unit, the Dance Base production Off Kilter and the Scottish International Storytelling Festival. In 2007 she was part of '26 solos' created by Ian Spink and was given the opportunity to perform extracts from it in April of this year, as part of the POOL performance at The Space in Dundee.

Authentic movement is a meditative, therapeutic & creative movement practice in which, with eyes closed, we listen to our bodies and wait to be moved by the impulses, images and feelings that arise, in the presence of at least one witness. The witness watches and tracks inner responses to the mover with the intention of not judging, but focusing on self-awareness. Authentic Movement has been described as “Inner Directed Movement” and “Spontaneous ChiKung”
Authentic Movement has been used extensively as an inspirational tool for choreography, visual art, poetry, music, therapy and healing.

Dance Ireland invites proposals from experienced international dance artists/choreographers for consideration for our International Associate Artist Programme 08/09. A new initiative, this is an opportunity for two international dance artists to undertake a self-designed programme of research and development, with free studio space in residence at DanceHouse, stipend, access to Dance Ireland programmes, advisory support and networking opportunities.
We aim to support the creative process and emerging ideas of artists, not final product. Finished, fully produced work is not expected, nor is Dance Ireland able to support final productions. Our interest is in providing opportunities for international artists to critically reflect on their artistic practice and take time, in residence at DanceHouse, to further develop their own unique artistic process.
We wish to strengthen contacts, promote creative exchanges and facilitate dialogue among dance artists nationally and internationally. We promote dance and cultural exchange by providing opportunities for dance artists to share with the professional dance community and Dance Ireland – knowledge, creative developments, ideas and artistic processes.
The residency programme offers up to a maximum of 12 working weeks over a 12 month period from August 2008 to August 2009. The aim of the residency is to enable international artists to work for concentrated periods of time in DanceHouse. The first residency period is from 18 August to 5 September 2008 (three weeks inclusive); the second and third residency periods are scheduled for January/February and July/August 2009.
Submission deadline: Friday 30 May 2008
Proposals will be considered by a peer panel convened by Dance Ireland; assessment will be based on proposal. Applicants will be notified by Friday 13 June 2008.

An Introduction to the Principles of the Laban Dance Method Couper Institute, 84 Clarkston Rd, Glasgow, G44 3DA Saturday 18th May 2008 at 10.00am – 4.00pm Jenny Elliott is Artistic Director of Orbit Dance and Company Maine, two contemporary Dance Companies that have emerged over the last ten years from healthcare settings in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Jenny is well known for her development of Laban-based contemporary dance programmes throughout a diverse range of healthcare services such as learning disability, brain injury, elderly care and mental health. She recently completed a comprehensive research project mapping the journeys of a group of men with enduring brain injury and the nurses who care for them as they came together to create a dance company and perform in a community theatre. This one-day course is a practical lead introduction to the Principles of Laban Dance Method and provides a working dance framework for healthcare staff that may have an interest in developing dance within their work environment. The course is designed to enhance participants’ skills and understanding of dance in healthcare.
